Putting on an event the size of a small town (no really, Maggie Valley’s population is 635) is no small feat (no pun intended). At least we don’t have to vote on a Mayor or Town Council or School Board or…you get the picture.  The bottom line, it takes MANY hands to make Ignite a success!

We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with duties on the night of the show (think registration, VIP services, maybe some tech assistance, etc.). Roles are being formulated as I type this.  If you have a desire to be on the front lines of Igniting your city with passion and ideas but don’t feel like taking the stage, why not join our lively group?! It’s great for your resume, time commitment is minimal, and you never know who you’ll meet!

Global Movement Spreads Through Raleigh

Ignite Raleigh 2 at Lincoln Theatre on March 3

RALEIGH – Zombies, women’s boxing, saving energy and relationships are all on the agenda at Lincoln Theatre Wednesday night as 19 presenters and 600 attendees take part in Ignite Raleigh 2, sponsored by Phonebooth.com. This free event is part of Global Ignite Week, a global movement to share and spread inspiring ideas, which is taking place this week in more than 60 cities on six continents.

“Ignite events originated in Seattle in 2006 as technology variety shows, but they have grown into much more than that,” said Jeffrey L. Cohen, partner of OurHashtag, LLC, which is hosting the event. “Ignite is about ideas that can change the world. And it takes less than five minutes to spread one.” Since 2006, hundreds of five-minute talks have been given across the world. OurHashtag hosted the first Ignite Raleigh at the Lincoln Theater last August.

The format for each Ignite event is the same: each presenter is given five minutes on stage to present 20 slides, which will automatically advance every 15 seconds. The goal for presenters is to keep up with their slides and present the topics in an engaging and concise manner. Ignite Raleigh 2 will feature presentations selected by members of the Triangle community, as well as topics selected by the organizers. Nadia Moffett, 2010 Miss North Carolina USA, and WRAL-TV Meterologist Elizabeth Gardner are two of the speakers who will present their ideas in the five-minute format.

“We had a tremendous community response to Ignite Raleigh last year and we are looking forward to an even bigger event in 2010,” said Wayne Sutton, entrepreneur, strategist and one of the organizers of Ignite Raleigh. “The presenters have a better understanding of the five-minute format, and the audience knows what to expect. This event will showcase some of the talented individuals and the diversity of ideas in the Triangle.”

With the launch of Nadia’s foundation in 2008, Make Me A Queen Foundation, which is a not for profit organization with its mission is to inspire young women to reach their full potential, she was able to make an impact in her community and the lives of many young women.
Nadia’s passion and purpose for her role as Miss North Carolina USA is to inspire young women to reach maximum potential in their lives. Her plan is to expand the Make Me A Queen Foundation program to women across the state of North Carolina, driving empowerment, inspiration and growth among young women. She looks forward to continuing her passion for women’s empowerment through her advocacy of Breast and Ovarian Cancer research throughout the state of North Carolina.
Nadia enjoys running 5K and 10K races, writing and reciting poetry, public Speaking and working with youth. Requirements:

1. Create 20 slides to illustrate and support your presentation. The title slide counts as one of the 20.

2. Use this IgniteRaleigh Title Slide (in powerpoint) to begin your presentation. This is the only format requirement. There is no template for your interior slides.

3. Create your presentation in Powerpoint or Keynote.

4. Each slide will show for only 15 seconds and automatically advance.

5. No animation, video or other moving parts on individual slides.

6. No transitions between slides. We will build large presentation decks grouping presentations in order (to be determined) and set auto advance (every 15 seconds).

7. Slides are due Friday, February 26 by 8pm. Speakers will be contacted how to submit slide decks.

Suggestions:

1. Outline your talk and develop your 3-5 main ideas before creating any slides.

2. Create visual slides that illustrate your points.

3. Avoid bullet points. The audience wants to hear what you have to say, not read it from the screen.

4. A tightly scripted talk that requires you to hit slides when they switch requires lots of practice.

5. Practice, practice, practice.

The team and I want to share a bit more about the selection process. We have provided the community voting platform for the last 20 odd days – which is set to close on February 17th. From all of the talk proposals submitted, the top 10 voted on by you will be given the opportunity to speak at Ignite night. The organizing team will also select a handful of additional speakers (current thought is 4) that we think are also great ideas. We do this to provide an opportunity to speakers with great ideas but perhaps not the largest social network. Lastly, we will have three featured speakers to share cool experiences and unique perspectives. We want to cram as much into two hours as you can possibly absorb.

We encourage you to come out and bring your friends to the Lincoln Theatre on March 3rd 2010. Enjoy a cold beverage, listen to passionate people share their ideas in 5 minutes and meet some cool people. See you there.

There are a few things you can do this week.

1. Mark your calendars, March 3rd 2010. If you are able to attend, consider reserving your seat today. This is a hot ticket. And did we mention it’s free! If you can’t attend, please leave your ticket for someone else. Ignite Raleigh 3 will be here before you know it.
2. Be sure to vote! Help your favorite speaker and the great topics, whether Hot, New or otherwise awesome. Let your voice be heard.
3. Show your support for local education through a deserving charity project with Donors Choose. It’s a great way to help our schools with the challenges that are most urgent right now. We will tell you more about this effort in another blog post this week. Stay tuned.

Get fired up Raleigh! Global Ignite Week is coming in March!

Global Ignite Week is both an in-person and online phenomenon. Local Ignites will stream live video during the event, and those videos will be archived on the new Ignite video site that is being launched in conjunction with the event. At least 500 five-minute session videos will be available on the new site when it debuts.

Today we’re pleased to announce the presentation submissions for Ignite Raleigh 2. Do you have what it takes to stand in-front of hundreds people and share your ideas with the community? If so starting today, you can submit your presentation ideas for Ignite Raleigh 2. As the ideas are submitted, you can vote up to 10 times on other Ignite talks that you would like to see. We’re planning to have 15 presentations. The top 10 presentation ideas selected by the community will present at Ignite Raleigh 2. Five will be chosen from the organizing committee.

To submit your Ignite Raleigh presentation topic go to http://voting.igniteraleigh.com and log in to the site. Enter your topic or presentation title in the box below “I would like to speak on ……” Click the button that says “create a new idea” to launch a pop-up window where you can add more detailed information about your talk. Also please consider adding a link to a short video pitch of your talk (under 1 minute), so the community can get a better sense of your presentation style.

As presentation talks start to roll in you have up to 10 votes to vote on the topics you would like to see at Ignite Raleigh 2. We recommend visiting http://voting.igniteraleigh.com/ often in the next couple of weeks to review submitted topics and vote for your favorites. After submitting your own topic, encourage your friends and followers to vote for your presentation.

We want everyone to focus on Ignite presentations that teach something and have social value, but are open and creative. The presentation submissions and voting deadline will be February 17, 2010 with the top 10 vote getters speaking to the community.
